What Happens When You Go Out in The Sun?
Posted by AROMATIC GARDEN ESSENCE

Most of you would say, tanning what else? But what you may not know is that a lot happens under the layers of your skin when you are out in the sun, unprotected. And these are the reasons, why every skincare expert advises you to never skip your sunscreen, before stepping out in the sun.
Let’s dig a bit deeper and understand why you need to protect your skin from the sun.
Only a few know that our skin is made of three layers, Epidermis, Dermis, and Hypodermis. Epidermis, which is the top layer of the skin, has cells that produce melanin. Melanin are pigments that provide colour to your skin. Dermis is the second layer of the skin where blood vessels, hair follicles, and sweat glands are located. The third layer is Hypodermis which contains fat and connective tissues.
Now that you have a rough idea about the skin structure, let’s move on to understanding sunrays, the focal point of our today’s topic.
Sun emits three types of Ultraviolet Rays, UVA, UVB, and UVC.

UVA or Ultraviolet Ageing Rays are the most common rays. These rays have the longest wavelength and can penetrate the second layer of the skin.
UVB Rays are commonly known as Ultraviolet Burning Rays. These rays have shorter wavelengths and can only penetrate the top layer of the skin. These rays are responsible for the burning sensation that you feel while being out in the sun. They are also responsible for triggering melanin cells, causing your skin to get tanned.
The third is the UVC Rays, which are the shortest, but the most dangerous rays. However, thanks to the ozone layer, it does not reach the Earth’s atmosphere.
What do harmful sunrays do to your skin?
What many people don’t know is that UVA Rays can also penetrate the glass and enter your home, so if you are thinking that you are protected from UVA Rays sitting at your home or office, you are mistaken.
While UVB Rays only tan and darken the skin, UVA Rays do much more damage to the skin. It can cause Photo Ageing in your skin by producing free radicals, making your skin AGE FASTER.
Not just that, prolonged exposure to sun rays (UVA+UVB) can also cause skin cells to get damaged and even die. However, it does not mean that you should stop going out in the sun altogether.
“The good news is that you can reverse the damage done to your skin by following one simple rule which is to protect your skin from sun exposure as much as possible.”
What do you need to do?
The best solution is to apply good sunscreen or sunblock to protect your skin from sun damage. How will you know whether your sunscreen can provide good protection from harmful sun rays? Simple! You should always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, as a broad-spectrum sunscreen can save you from both UVA and UVB rays. However, keep in mind not to buy a sunscreen simply looking at higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor), because no sunscreen can provide 100% protection from the sun, while the difference in protection differs only by a few percent.
For instance, SPF 30 sunscreen can protect you from approx. 97% of the UVB Rays, while an SPF 50 sunscreen can shield up to 98% of UVB Rays. Apart from this, you can keep your skin covered as much as possible by wearing long-sleeve clothes and wide-brim hats. Since, it may not be possible for most of us, due to the scorching heat in the summer, the best way is to invest in a good quality sunscreen or sunblock. Wondering whether you should go for a physical sunscreen or a chemical sunscreen.
