Your Skincare Routine is NOT Working… Here’s Why?

Have you been changing product after product, because your skincare regime doesn’t seem to be effective?  Have you ever wondered, that the problem might not be the product, but something else? I may know what’s going on here. It’s not following a proper skincare routine. So, without further delay, let’s take a look what a proper skincare regime should include.

Double-Cleansing is Must.

If you have not been double cleansing, then you are putting skincare products on unclean dirty skin, especially if you love to wear make-up often. Yes! You heard that right. As facewashes are generally water-based and effective in removing water-soluble impurities, they may not be as effective in removing oil-soluble impurities, like sebum and oil fumes from cooking, along with impurities that are stuck in sebum.

Since water and oil do not mix, you would need an oil-based cleanser to remove oil-soluble impurities. This is why double cleansing is so important, as double cleansing helps to ensure that your skin is clear-like a canvas, making it more receptive to skincare products.

Are you scrubbing your skin?

If you are not scrubbing your face, then you are most probably applying skincare products to dead skin cells, reducing the effectiveness of the skincare products significantly. Why so? It is because our skin produces new skin cells and pushes the old ones to the top of the skin. Once the skin cells reach the top, they die and form a barrier of dead skin cells. In such case, when you apply skincare products, most of the products get absorbed by the dead skin cells, giving your skin just 50% benefit. But when you scrub, you are not just removing the dead skin cells, but also allowing skincare products to reach healthy skin cells and become 100% effective. Many of you may not know that scrubbing also helps to boost the cell-regeneration process, which starts to slow down due to ageing.

Understand the effect of skincare ingredients

Why this is important? Let’s understand with an example. Many of you must have heard that Retinol is a potent anti-ageing ingredient, and Vitamin C has brightening properties. Perfect combination, that’s what you thought after reading this right? And that’s what you bought.

But, did you know the combination of Retinol and Vit. C is the recipe for disaster? It is because both Retinol and Vit. C are acidic in nature. While Retinol has anti-ageing properties, it also exfoliates the skin, so combining it with another potent acid, like Vit. C can irritate the skin, causing skin inflammation.

So, now you know why just knowing your skincare ingredients is not enough; and this is why you should also know how the ingredient will affect your skin and which ingredients should be used together. Choosing or combining the wrong skincare products or ingredients can adversely affect your skin, instead of giving you desired benefits.

Know the right way to layer skincare products

Just applying the skincare products won’t do, unless you are applying it in the right order. For instance, if you think, applying Serums directly to your skin after facewash is okay, then you are highly mistaken. Your skin’s protective layer may get disrupted after washing the face; this is why toner proves beneficial as it can help restore skin’s protective layer by removing the last traces of impurities and facewash residue, preparing your skin for potent ingredients in your serums and moisturisers.

Here you need to understand that every skincare product in a regime has an important function and that is why it is applied in that order. AGE recommends all its clients to apply skincare products in the following order:

You are changing your skincare products too frequently

Skincare doesn’t give results overnight. It is all about practice in patience. Before you jump to the conclusion that your skincare product is not working, give your skin some time to adapt. In general, depending on the skin condition, your skin may take a few weeks to 1-2 months to show visible results. Always remember, when it comes to skincare, consistency is the key.
